Blackmagic and No Film School want you to create a 3 minute or less short short film that tells a story through dramatic lighting techniques. It can be natural light or complex setups, but we want your cinematic lighting chops to be shown on the display of Blackmagic cameras. How does lighting create drama and convey meaning?
Keep it clean and PG-13.
So make your short form, upload it to YouTube and add the hashtag #storythroughlightingcontest by July 29, 11:59 p.m. PT. Anything published after July 29th will not be taken into account.
- Must be 18 years or older
- Must be original content (including music, pictures, and videos)
- Must not use archival material
- Must be recorded at 1080p or higher
- Must be by July 29, 2021 at 11:59 p.m. PT. be submitted

ELIGIBILITY: The competition is open to anyone aged 18 or over. Blackmagic or its affiliate employees and immediate family members (spouses, parents, siblings, and children) and household members of these employees are not eligible to participate or to win. Employees of No Film School, the sponsor, are also not eligible to participate or to win.
AGREEMENT TO OFFICIAL RULES: By participating, you declare your unconditional and unconditional consent to (a) these official rules and (b) the final and binding decisions of the film school. Winning a prize requires that all of the requirements listed herein have been met.
SUBMISSION RULES: You can only submit one entry.
BY SUBMITTING AN ENTRY, YOU AGREE THAT THE ITEM (AND EACH INDIVIDUAL COMPONENT THEREOF – INCLUDING, WITHOUT LIMITATION, THE SHORT FILM) MEETS ALL OF THE TERMS SET FORTH IN THESE RULES. THE EXEMPTED PARTIES ASSUME NO LIABILITY WITH RESPECT TO THE USE OF YOUR ENTRY OR ANY COMPONENTS THEREOF – INCLUDING, WITHOUT LIMITATION, THE SHORT FILM. THE EXEMPTED PARTIES WILL BE HARMED BY YOU IF IT IS SUBSEQUENTLY PROVIDED THAT YOU HAVE SUBMITTED OR NOT COMPLETED TO THESE RULES AND / OR YOUTUBE RULES.
By participating in the competition, you hereby affirm and warrant that each film you submit:
- is originally for you;
- is less than 3 minutes long and available in 1080p or better quality;
- is uploaded to YouTube with the hashtag #storythroughlightingcontest
- contains contact information on the YouTube channel
- does not violate any law, statute, ordinance or regulation;
- will not make any claim including, but not limited to, claims of infringement of intellectual property rights, invasion of privacy or the public, or infringement of the rights and / or interests of any third party; and
- Is not defamatory, libelous, pornographic or obscene, and does not contain, represent, include, discuss or include, but is not limited to, the following: nudity; Alcohol / drug use or smoking; explicit or graphic sexual activity or sexual innuendo; gross, vulgar, or offensive language and / or symbols; derogatory characterizations of ethnic, racial, sexual, religious, or other groups; personally identifiable information about individuals including, without limitation, names, phone numbers and addresses (physical or electronic); commercial news, comparisons, or solicitation of any products or services that are not sponsor’s products; all identifiable products, trademarks, brands and / or logos of any third party other than those of the sponsor); Conduct or other activities that violate these rules; and / or other comments that are inappropriate, inappropriate, offensive, or that could be viewed as such, as determined by Sponsor in its sole and absolute discretion.
Sponsor reserves the right, at any time and for any reason, in its sole discretion, to request an entrant to change, edit, and / or resubmit their film to ensure that the film complies with these rules. or for any other reason. If such action is required at any time during or after the Competition, Sponsor reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to take any action it deems necessary in the circumstances, including, without limitation, disqualifying the film ( and therefore the corresponding entry and / or the associated participant).
Sponsor’s Rights to Short Films: By participating, you are irrevocably granting Sponsor, its agents, and licensees an unconditional, fully paid, and perpetual (non-exclusive) license to publish, publish, and display your film as it is (in your name for Indication of film credits) in the respective licensee’s social media feeds and blogs, as well as in other forms of marketing materials relating to the competition, without your consent or any other party or additional consideration.
Finalist Selection: Sponsor will review all eligible entries received throughout the Entry Period and select a winner. If Sponsor, in its sole discretion, believes that a film does not comply with these Official Rules or is otherwise inappropriate for publication, Sponsor may decline that entry and select another. The chances of being selected depend on the number of entries received.
Winner selection: The sponsor will select two (2) winners from the submissions at its own discretion. The sponsor’s decision is final.
Prizes: The winner will receive prizes including, but not limited to: a Blackmagic Pocket Cinema 6K Pro.
GENERAL TERMS AND CONDITIONS: If the operation, security, or administration of the Contest is compromised in any way, including but not limited to fraud, viruses, or other technical issues, Sponsor may, in its sole discretion, either: (a) suspend the Contest in order to correct the interference and then resume competition in a manner that best fits the spirit of these Official Rules; or (b) randomly award prizes from eligible entries received up to the time of impairment. Sponsor reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to disqualify any person who manipulates the conduct of the competition, violates these official rules, or acts unsportsmanlike or disruptive. Sponsor reserves the right to seek damages from any person who attempts to undermine the lawful conduct of the competition. In the event of a dispute over the owner of a post, the authorized account owner of the Twitter account used to participate is considered the participant. The competition is subject to federal, state, and local laws and regulations and is void where prohibited.
RELEASE AND LIMITATION OF LIABILITY: By entering the Contest, you consent to sponsors and award donors as well as their respective parent companies, subsidiaries, affiliates, officers, directors, employees and agents (“Sponsors”) of and. indemnify and hold harmless against any claim or cause of action arising out of entering the competition or receiving or using a prize, including, but not limited to: (a) unauthorized human interference in the competition; (b) technical errors related to computers, servers, providers, or telephone or network lines; (c) any errors on the YouTube platform; (d) typographical errors; (e) lost, delayed, chargeable, misrouted, or undeliverable mail; (f) errors in the administration of the competition or the processing of entries; or (g) Injury or damage to persons or property caused, directly or indirectly, in whole or in part, by the entrant’s participation in the Contest or the receipt or use of a prize. You further agree that the indemnified parties’ liability in any cause of action is limited to the cost of entering and entering the Contest, and in no event shall Sponsors be liable for attorney fees. You waive the right to seek any compensation for damages, including, but not limited to, punitive, consequential, direct or indirect damages.
DISPUTES: You agree that all disputes, claims, and causes of action arising out of or relating to the Contest or any award will be resolved individually without recourse to any class action lawsuit and solely through state or federal courts located in Los Angeles County, California. All questions and questions regarding the interpretation, validity, interpretation, and enforceability of these Official Rules, your rights and obligations, or the sponsor’s rights and obligations in connection with the Contest are governed by and will be construed in accordance with the laws of the State of California, without Choice of law or conflict of law rules (whether of the State of California or any other jurisdiction) that would result in the application of the laws of any jurisdiction other than the State of California.
