James Cameron’s epic sci-fi movie Avatar starring Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Stephen Lang, Michelle Rodriguez and Sigourney Weaver was released in 2009. The film became the highest grossing film of all time until ” Avengers: Endgame ”breaks the record.
Now the film is set to once again become the highest grossing film of all time. The technologically pioneering blockbuster is set to be re-released in China after the county film bureau approved the plan. Initially, the film was supposed to be released as one of several US films slated for Chinese theatrical re-releases in 2020, when Chinese theaters first attempted to reopen. However, the increase in coronavirus cases has put those plans on the back burner.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the James Cameron avatar will be made available to exhibitors for national release in IMAX 3D and regular 3D in China. The film’s release is expected to return Avatar to the top of the all-time global box office charts. The movie is fair $ 7.4 million away to become box office champion again by beating Avengers: Endgame.
When Avatar was released in 2009, it became a major box office player across the globe. The film has also proven to be lucrative in China as it builds up $ 202.62 million and become the highest grossing film in China so far. Previously, the 2012 film was the highest grossing film in the country. The film managed to win $ 68.67 million at the Chinese box office.
Meanwhile, James Cameron has reportedly signed with 20th Century Fox to produce sequels, Avatar 2 and Avatar 3. Main filming is also complete, and both sequels are slated for release on December 16, 2022 and December 20, 2024, respectively. Several cast members are expected to return, including Worthington, Saldana, Lang and Weaver.
