Good writing is the need of the hour, actor Boman Irani believes, to maintain the public interest at a time when OTT offers too much choice.

“The OTT platform offers an opportunity not only for writers but also for actors and technicians. However, on OTT there are thousands of choices. It takes 10-15 minutes to dismiss if you can’t engage the audience at their home. This can be avoided with good writing, which also applies for the rest of the show. Writing has become the superstar of the OTT platform, ”Irani told IANS.

“If your script isn’t good, your game won’t go well, and I say that even for theatrical releases. Why should you have weaker scripts just because it’s in the theatrical space? »Adds Boman Irani.

The theatrical release of many films, including the biggest ones, has been postponed amid the ongoing second wave of the Covid pandemic. While this results in losses for Bollywood, Boman Irani sees a silver lining.

“The pandemic has created many problems. I hope and say this in a positive tone that once things open up people will be dying to return to theaters and there will be a strong wave of footsteps in theaters again ” , he hopes.

Asked whether OTT platforms would eventually replace the big screen experience, Boman Irani replied, “When television arrived, the number of visitors decreased in single-screen cinemas, and then there is. had a flare up again. I think the big screen is a whole different experience, there will be movies made for the big screen. I don’t think it can be replaced, as it is a family experience that people look forward to, especially in India. Huge screen and great sound can’t be permanently erased by something that’s filtered through your phone. “

Boman recently celebrated his “Spiral Bound” screenwriting workshop by finishing one year. “It started maybe two years ago when we launched Irani Movietone (his production house). I took down Alex Dinelaris, the “Birdman” writer, who came to do a workshop and who defined the trip. Before the lockout, I had five to six young writer-directors consulting me on their scripts. While locking, we started to coordinate the zoom call. This is how it started. Now we have a lot of people joining us, ”the actor recalls.

Boman Irani is known for effortlessly nailing the characters he plays on screen and most importantly for his impeccable comedic timing. Any advice for aspiring actors?

“Find out in the script what the character is looking for, what his quest is. As soon as you understand this, trust me, playing becomes easier! Also, just like musicians do their riyaaz every morning, as an actor you should also practice something every day, not just land on set and spit out your lines, ”he concluded.

Boman Irani’s upcoming projects include “83”, “Jayeshbhai Jordaar” and “Mayday” by Ajay Devgn.
