Niall Horan realized he could never leave a hotel room and walk around as a member of One Direction after a bizarre fan moment in Peru.
The singer admits he was the only member of the group who would still challenge the lockdown rules for managers, begging them to let him leave the group’s hotel and wander the streets of a town he never had visited before a concert.
“I struggled with that (lockout rules)…” says Niall Horan in a new interview with Dermot O’Leary for the Audible’s People podcast, Just People. “We were 17, 18, 19 the first few years… and I have to do something all the time. And the idea of closing my curtains in my hotel room was crazy to me.
Niall Horan continued, “But you can’t get into a fan’s brain, and now I get it completely, but at that point you’re like…, ‘Let us out! We just want to walk down the street. You must understand!'”
It took a moment of madness in Lima for the singer to realize how dangerous it could be to leave your hotel room.
“We arrive in Lima at 1 am and drive from the airport to the hotel, and we see a shopping center,” he recalls. “Me and Louis (Tomlinson) and Liam (Payne) were like, ‘OK, when we get up tomorrow morning, we’ll take a little walk over there.’
“The next morning we wake up and Louis and I were playing FIFA (video game) in the room, and Liam gets up and says, ‘Come on, let’s go’. And Louis still had his curtains drawn. Then Louis said: “Look out this window”.
“The police had taken a count, and there were 10,000 people on the streets all the time.” (KL / WNWC / LOT)
