Several TV shows and films have addressed different social issues with their content – and Sab TV’s Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah was no different. One of the oldest shows on Indian television, it once dealt with the issue of child marriage and saw actor Bhavya Gandhi, aka Tipendra Gada (Tapu), as a groom. Read on to find out more.

In one of its first episodes (quite a number of years ago), the show’s main character, Tapu, was married to another young character Tina at the insistence of Champaklal and Daya.

Tapu by Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah has kept us laughing with his antics and dialogue for years, and we were all shocked to see him as a married child. Initially, we weren’t sure why child marriage was featured on the show, but later the reason behind it emerged.

This episode of TMKOC in question had Champaklal (Amit Bhatt) and Daya (Disha Vakani) adamant about Tapu’s marriage. So much so that they laid eyes on Tina – a well-born and raised daughter – as their stepdaughter. Assuming this was a perfect match for Tapu, they arranged Tapu and Tina’s marriage only to turn on them and make us laugh.

When Tina first entered Gada’s house, everyone was excited except Jethalal because he didn’t like it. The new bahu not only looks gentle, but has far too many questions about why certain rituals are being performed. Watch the video here:

While their dreams finally collapsed at the end, we’re glad they brought the subject up on the show. They gave us another reason to love him.
