How will challenging actors make your job even better?
Editor’s note: spoilers for Mare from Easttown Consequences.
Watch the excellent Mare from Easttown on HBO? Written by Brad Ingelsby and directed by Craig Zobel, the show takes us to a suburb of Philadelphia that has suffered from some recent traumatic crimes. As someone who grew up in the Philly suburbs, I was blown by the accuracy, accents, and accomplishments of the cast.
It’s crazy to know that one of the best performances might not have happened.
Evan Peters, best known for his work in the X-Men Universum, portrays a young policeman named Zabel who has solved a major case and is now tasked with cracking another. Peters plays Kate Winslet’s title mare, and her chemistry was palpable on the screen.
Recently the told actor The New York Times about what it’s like to be on the show and how it nearly broke him. Again comes the spoiler.
This week we were treated for Zabel’s death. He was shot in the head in a surprising quick-draw scene that didn’t give the audience much time to process the violence.
In Peters’ words, he was “thrilled with the idea that this was going to happen, in order to create this whole character, and formulate this whole plot so that it is almost like we did it for that moment.”
He continued, “It’s this interesting way of developing a character, knowing that this is how he is going to die … It felt very real to me and it kind of speaks of the danger of being in that line Job. It reminded me of that moment in Burn after reading where Brad Pitt is shot in the forehead in the closet – which is kind of weird but also really shocking, and we wanted that feeling as soon as it happened. ”
Zobel confirmed these feelings.
“I thought it was very smart,” said Zobel in an interview with Vanity Fair. “He has his cathartic moment where he becomes more active as a character after we hear his backstory and how he didn’t really solve that case in Upper Darby. It’s just about getting a person straight to a point where they have the most options and stopping them. ”
While that scene blew us all away, the one that really affects Peters was a little earlier on the show. It was the drunken joke he made in episode three, one where all social media cheered him and his realistic attitude.
Peters told Vanity Fair that he actually thought he had bombed this scene and was shocked by it.
“The reason Craig and I were emotional and hugging was because I was sobbing hysterically,” Peters said. “I thought we didn’t understand the scene. I said, “We didn’t understand, we didn’t understand. I can’t do this i’m horrible. I’m going to shadow you, Craig, and be a director because I can’t anymore. ‘And he said,’ It’s okay. It’s cool man I think we got it. ‘ […] What’s wrong with my internal judgment? Where I don’t even know if it’s good ”
Peters was very wrong here. Not only did he kill the scene, but he also won over everyone and unlocked a fun romantic subplot that made his death all the worse in episode five.
And he did it all with a secret trick. Apparently, he drank apple cider vinegar to set off some memories that he was drunk on his body. Zobel tweeted this tech in response to a fan.
Sober, but drink small Dixie cups of apple cider vinegar from the prop master on set about every half hour to trigger sensory memories. “Let me down my bagel,” was an idea Evan had the night before that made me cry and cry at rehearsals, and I insisted we continue.

This is not the only time that Peters has chosen “Method” for the role. He also became a huge fan of hoagies, which he ate all the time while filming.
Winslet told The Envelope Podcast“He’d say, ‘Ugh, you have to try the Gobbler … And it was basically that giant submarine – or Hoagie, that giant Hoagie … It’s basically a Thanksgiving meal at a Hoagie … He was like, “Oh yeah, I’ll just eat that thing and pass out.” And I’d say, ‘I’m not surprised! I’m not surprised, Evan!’ ”
His appearance on the show should get him some Emmy considerations this year and is an excellent lynchpin for him in more mature roles.
