Hollywood is full of “what-if” legends. This one may have delivered a film as great as the one we got, but still very different.
If a book becomes a bestseller, every film studio in the world will likely be bidding on it. It will also attract the attention of great filmmakers. Well, Michael Crichton wrote these books for almost a decade. His stories mix elements of adventure and science fiction and were loved by the general public.
As it turned out, so did Steven Spielberg and James Cameron.
If Crichton’s groundbreaking book Jurassic Park came out it was an extremely hot property. And both filmmakers fought to secure the rights to the film.
This week, at the opening of a Titanic Museum in Belfast, Cameron told an audience, “I tried to buy the book rights and he knocked me out for a couple of hours.”
The “he” here refers to Spielberg, his film Jurassic Park is an all time classic.
Still, it’s fun to think about Cameron’s version. Cameron doesn’t seem to believe he missed making a classic, praising Spielberg’s vision, saying, “But when I saw the film, I realized I wasn’t the right person to make the film, him it was. Because he made a dinosaur movie. ” for children, and mine would have been Extraterrestrials with dinosaurs, and that wouldn’t have been fair. ”
I can’t imagine the R-rated survival film being anything like it Extraterrestrialsbut with dinosaurs attacking a group of people. I wish Universal would let Cameron give it a try today.
Cameron continued, “Dinosaurs are for eight year olds. We can all enjoy it too, but kids get dinosaurs and they shouldn’t have been left out because of it. His sensitivity was right for this film, I would have gone even further. worse, much worse. ”
It is true that Spielberg and writer David Koepp changed the novel, which was a cynical story about playing a god, and made something that captures the wonder of the dinosaurs and the horror of the hubris of their revival. Cameron seems like he’s leaned into the violence of the novel and made it a little closer to a horror movie.
