How do you put someone in a movie?
When Zack Snyder decided to move away Chris D’Elia out Army of the Dead after some allegations against him, he was up to an incredible task. His VFX team not only had to digitally scrape the actor out of already filmed scenes, but also go back and record exact camera movements and angles with a new actress, Tig Notaro.
Zack Snyder told the story vulture, “I had to do this incredibly technical experiment, recreating every scene, shot by shot. My visual effects supervisor, Marcus Taormina, took Chris out of the film completely so that Tig would have freedom [to move] in the backdrops. ”
This is a collection of some of the most complex images made with visual effects Army of the Dead including how Tig Notaro was digitally inserted into the film!
Check out the video from Netflix below.
Army of the Dead follows a team of mercenaries led by Dave Bautista as they infiltrate zombie-infested Las Vegas to salvage millions of dollars from a casino vault, but it turns out the hardest part of all was getting to Notaro Add film.
In the video you can see two versions of adding the actor. You have one that is all CGI. They scanned her body and were then able to make digital versions of her for the effect scenes. The other version is just acting alone in a studio in California, surrounded by green screens.
To get the footage right, Snyder had to instruct her to speak as quickly as the person she was replacing, and even had to take multiple shots to make sure he accurately mimicked his own camera movements.
Snyder said vulture, “Some of the trickiest shots were where she’s running in the group – I had to go with the [camera] Pans, and it was difficult to find the right perspective. Took a couple of months to get all of the individual effects and make them seamless. Marcus was able to fumble it around and get it working, and [her footage] was surprisingly easy. “
It looks smooth to me. Let me know what you think in the comments.
