Viola Davis, Riz Ahmed Round Out Show’s Ensemble Cast – Deadline

Oscar nominees Viola Davis and Riz Ahmed are joining the ensemble cast scheduled for the 93rd Academy Awards, show producers Jesse Collins, Stacey Sher and Steven Soderbergh announced today.

Davis, Oscar winner for Fences as Best Supporting Actress is four times nominated and shortlisted this year for Best Actress in Ma Rainey’s black background for which she won the SAG award as a lead actress. Emmy winner Ahmed is nominated for the first time at the Academy Awards for Best Actor for Metal sound. When asked at last Saturday’s press conference if any new additions to the presenters’ “cast” were coming, Soderbergh said they would announce two final names, but “logistics” were delaying its release to that time. One reason could be that voting continued until 5 p.m. PT on Tuesday, and the Academy may not have wanted to give the selection of two actual nominees a publicity boost. by announcing that they were also part of the show. While it’s pretty common for nominees to also act as presenters in the same year, it seems Oscar producers are avoiding this time around.
