‘Tina’ Produces 1.1 Million Linear and Streaming Viewers, Best HBO Max Documentary Screening to Date – Deadline

Tina reached a total audience of 1.1 million viewers both linear and streaming, said WarnerMedia, in the best show to date by a documentary on HBO Max.

The portrait of Tina Turner, which features a new interview with the singer at her home in Switzerland, is the highest-rated HBO documentary since Leaving Neverland in 2019.

Dan Lindsay and TJ Martin, who won the Oscar for Best Documentary for Unbeaten in 2012, co-produced Tina. Also behind the film is Lightbox, the production company founded by Oscar-winning producer Simon Chinn and Emmy-winning producer Jonathan Chinn. Diane Becker is also a producer. Lightbox is also involved in the upcoming documentary Diane.

Tina looks back on Turner’s life and career, using a dazzling collection of archival footage spanning over six decades. The epic story stretches from his teenage years of fame alongside Ike Turner through the grueling years he abused and manipulated her, to his ultimate success as a solo artist in the 1980s.

WarnerMedia has not released specific statistics for HBO Max. The streaming service, which launched in May 2020, can be activated at no additional cost to HBO subscribers and has seen over 17 million activations by the end of 2020. HBO and HBO Max together grossed 41.5 million subscribers.

Several other notable documentaries, both from the HBO Documentaries team and the Max Originals slate, have drawn attention to HBO Max. One of the service’s launch titles was On disk, an investigative look at exiled music mogul Russell Simmons who started on Apple TV + before being cut. Collective action park, a look back at a New Jersey waterpark, premiered last August and was hailed by HBO Max as its most-watched movie in its first week.

Allen vs. Farrow, a four-part series focusing on the charges against Woody Allen, premiered with over a million viewers in February but declined in the following weeks.
