“MPs at the time saw no evidence of disability,” Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva said today at a press conference on the Tiger Woods car crash over early Tuesday. “He was alive and he was conscious, and that’s all it means,” the top cop added.
“It was brought to my attention that he had serious injuries to his leg and that was assessed during the incident,” noted LA County Fire Department Chief Daryl Osby. “To my knowledge, there have been no other life threatening injuries.”
The Woods SUV was traveling northbound and downhill on Hawthorne Boulevard at Rancho Palos Verdes crossed the median in the finish lane. The vehicle then crashed into trees, hit the sidewalk, rolled over and crashed into the side of the residential street just before 7:12 a.m. Tuesday.
Tiger Woods undergoes surgery after suffering ‘multiple leg injuries’ in Los Angeles car crash
Suffering from multiple injuries to both legs, the multiple PGA Tour winner was rushed to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center around 7:30 a.m. Tuesday because the facility is a trauma center shortly after LACFD removed a conscious Woods from the vehicle Broken, the Barrier Breaking Golfer was on the operating table and undergoing surgery, his agent Michael Steinberg confirmed in a statement. The infamous “jaws of life” were not used to get Woods out of the SUV, Chief Osby confirmed this afternoon.
This isn’t the first time Woods has been involved in more than a wing bender.
In 2009, he crashed his car into a fire hydrant near his home in Florida. The incident turned out to be the first opening round of a lengthy reveal of his personal affairs which showed a very different side to the supposedly net sportsman. In 2017, police found the golfer asleep in his parked car and he was arrested for DUI after failing a field field sobriety test. After this accident, it was reported that Woods had a plethora of pain relievers in his system, some of which had been prescribed due to back surgery that same year.
To complicate matters for Woods, 45, this time around he had another back surgery in January. The procedure, his fifth on the zone, involved removing part of a pressurized disc that was on a nerve.
Various LASD deputies remained at the scene in the expensive, resort-filled coastal town to investigate the wreckage, as did members of the county fire department. Manufactured by Genesis, the luxury division of Hyundai, the vehicle was pulled from the crash site in the last hour in the back of a flatbed truck.
LASD’s Lomita station “will conduct the traffic investigation and it will take a few days to several weeks to put it all together,” Sheriff Villanueva told the press today. Villanueva noted that the region has a high frequency of accidents “due to the curved hill. In fact, another crash happened that morning right there as passing drivers were distracted looking at the Woods crash site, Villanueva revealed at today’s press conference.
The relatively concise press conference was broadcast on all local networks, as well as CNN, MSNBC and Fox News. News of the Woods crash practically dominated cable news, even with major political events in Washington on Tuesday.
Seen the gold medal with NBA legend Dwyane Wade and others yesterday at the Rolling Hills Country Club, Woods was in Los Angeles to host a PGA Tour rally and film a series of videos for Gold Digest.
