30 rocks was an incredible television comedy with a specific episode that embodied the great thing about the entire series.
One of my favorite TV shows of all time was 30 rocks. It had the perfect mix of crazy humor, characters to love, and comedy from all angles. It was also a show that had a big heart. You loved the people in it, even if their problems and experiences weren’t always like ours. The reliability, dreams, desires and longings were enough to captivate you.
30 rocks on NBC was Tina Fey’s crowning achievement, a show that allowed her to showcase all of her talents at once. The ensemble is also one of the largest in television history, with each perfectly cast and crushed every scene.
But what was 30 rocks‘s best episode? The one who put the whole series in focus and showed us all the things that kept it on the air?
Check out this video from Nerdy, and let’s talk after the jump.
In the video we found out about the “Sandwich Day” episode of the series. It is Season 2, episode 14. The basic plot is that the Teamsters are going to get sandwiches from a secret shop. Meanwhile, Jack tries to revive his mentor so he can be promoted, and Liz Lemon will meet a guy she broke up with. It’s a simple plot for an episode that honestly made an average of laughs.
What he succeeds in is that it is about something relevant – the fear of the unknown and the fascination of the known.
Liz and the others know they love these sandwiches and they create a very comfortable zone in which to have a great life. And the fear that permeates them all is the idea that one day the sandwiches might go away and the unknown might take over.
As the episode progresses, we see each character grappling with the unknown, looking back at the past and doing things they could have done to change their current life, but also worry about what the future might bring. That kind of relevance was something the show didn’t shy away from. They were just so good at turning it into crazy metaphors like sandwiches. It was something I was always in awe of while watching.
This goes beyond the funny and gives us a glimpse into the reality of this world. 30 rocks Not only does it manage to make us laugh, but it never gets too depressing or real. It allowed us to examine things we might be going through without ever feeling depressed.
It’s the perfect episode because in the end the apple cart isn’t upset, we find the characters in stasis, enjoying sandwiches while learning their lessons. There is no better moral than to take life as it comes, to be okay with fear, but also not to demonize the things that make you feel good.
