Get inspired by HBO Cancellation, which opens with a theme song performed by star Nicole Kidman, Saturday Night Live considered opening credits songs for other hugely popular shows sung by their stars. They include Netflix Bridgerton, the queen’s gambit, stranger things and The queen, the office (now on Peacock), HBO’s Succession and Sex and the City (relaunched by HBO Max without Kim Cattrall) – which all have instrumental themes – and Frasier (also on Peacock), whose theme song performed by Kelsey Grammer was reimagined for the social media era. The sketch show also mocked HBO Max for relaunching Sex and the City without KimCattrall.
The lyrics of the songs are a brutal representation of the basic premise of each show. Some examples:
Steamy Regency Drama Bridgerton: “Sex, lots of colorblind sex, sex, costumes, but why does the opening credits look like a screensaver from the 90s?” (played by series narrator Julie Andrews, played by Cecily Strong)
Limited series of period chess The queen’s gambit: “Chess and drugs, drugs and chess, girls play chess, then take drugs and play chess.” (performed by star Anya Taylor-Joy, performed by Melissa Villaseñor)
Gender and city the comeback: “Gender and city without Samantha, it’s Gender and city without sex. Hope you enjoy the city. (portrayed by Cattrall as Samantha, played by Chloe Fineman)
Watch the above theme songs including SNL host John Krasinski makes a parody for his show Office.
