Is it available on a streaming service?
It is not. It’s available on DVD, but we’re looking to see if we can stream it and focus on it because it’s a very important movie I think. He’s the one I’m very proud of and made a huge impact, in fact, in his own world.
How has “Selena” affected you personally? When someone finds out that you directed “Selena”, what reaction do you have?
It’s incredible. I will tell you a story. I was in a weight loss spa, and I was on a treadmill, and there was a guy next to me on a treadmill. He was good old Texas, older guy, and we were doing the treadmill together, and he asks me what I’m doing – I get that question all the time – and I said, “Well, I am. filmmaker. He said, “Oh really? Have you made any films that I might have heard of? And I thought, “I hate having that question,” but I said, “Well, I did a few things,” and he said, “Tell me what.” And I said, “Well, I made a movie in Texas.” He said, “Really? What was that? “And I thought, ‘Oh my God, this guy is a good old boy, and’ Selena ‘is talking about the Tejano community. The relationship between the Tejano community and the Texan community is problematic at best. ”Anyway, so I said,“ ‘Selena’. ” And he said, “‘Selena’? It’s my favorite movie! It’s the greatest movie about Texas ever made!” And from that point on, that guy was all over me. He didn’t want to. not leave me alone. He bought me whatever he could get. He treated me with whatever you could imagine. We went out one evening for a steak dinner with the best bottle of wine, and he wanted to pay for everything , because I had done “Selena” and he loved “Selena”.
I got this response from the Latino community – from Tejanos and Chicano. They love the movie, and when they found out I made it, oh my god you can’t imagine it. But what amazes me is Everybody love this movie. I’m going to meet a blonde shopkeeper at a store in Orange County, and boy, when she found out that I did “Selena” she went crazy. She said she saw him as a little girl and identified with Selena. All of these women identified with Selena, and so many men and women relate to the father-daughter relationship. Women’s relationship with their father is such an important part of their life, and they tell me that the movie “Selena” meant more to them because of her relationship with her father.
Nick James, who was the editor of View and sound magazine, saw “Selena” at a movie festival, and he came to me afterwards and said, “It’s not my kind of movie, but I cried. I have a daughter and I must tell you that it made me cry. And I thought, “It touches people because it reaches a deep human level. This is what I wanted to capture. I really wanted to capture Selena’s spirit in this movie, and that’s what we focused on doing it. It’s such a tragic event, and there’s no way you can bring Selena back, but I wanted to do everything I could to try and bring something positive to this horrific tragedy.
