Sony is expanding its G Master series with a wide-angle lens for filmmakers.
The Sony E-Mount series today offers a new option with the Sony FE 14mm F1.8 G Master, a lens that will impress videographers and still photographers alike from the first images. The FE 14mm F1.8 has all of the optical design features we liked about the G Master series, including the highly reliable autofocus that is powered by linear actuators for fast, quiet operation.
Visually, Sony has added two XA, one aspherical, two ED and one Super ED element for edge-to-edge sharpness. There is a rear filter holder that can be combined with third party filters or filters that you create yourself. Sony includes a template for easy cutting out.
The lens barrel has an AF / MF switch, a de-click aperture option, which is best for video recording, and a focus hold button. It also features Sony’s linear answer ring for better manual focus. As you’d expect from a G Master lens, the front element has a fluorine coating to keep things clean, and the lens is resistant to dust and moisture.
During the press event, Sony pitted the FE 14mm F1.8 G Master against the Sigma 14mm F1.8 DG HSM Art, and while the Sigma was tuned to SLRs, the Sony lens blew it out of the water in every possible way: distortion, sharpness , Autofocus, chromatic aberration, resolution, contrast and overall size. It’s a Sony presentation, of course, and not an independent one, but it was impressive not even considering the Sigma 14mm F1.8 as an option if you’re serious about image quality.
The G Master series holds a high standing, and the FE 14mm F1.8 is no different. It is priced at $ 1,598 and will ship on April 21, 2021.
