The “ Masked Singer ” team in Season 5, Covid and Wildcards – Contenders TV – Deadline

The masked singer is currently in the middle of her fifth season on Fox and the team behind her realize they have to go above and beyond each season to keep fans glued to their screens.

This year, they also had to do it in the midst of Covid-19, a pandemic that initially hampered their host Nick Cannon. The artist was replaced for the first five episodes by Niecy Nash, who had previously served as a panelist.

Ken Jeong, one of the show’s stars, speaking at Deadline: Documentary + Unscripted Awards-season’s Contenders Television event, said Nash fits the show like a “glove.” “It was amazing to do it on such a short notice. Our chemistry was instantaneous. I am in awe of how she did this on a few days’ notice, I am impressed, this is a very hard show to moderate.

Showrunner James Breen and executive producer Rosie Seitchik also discussed how they keep the series fresh.

Breen explained how and why they brought in four wild candidates, including Cannon himself as Bulldog, Mark McGrath as Orca, and Bobby Brown as Crab.

“It’s an idea we’ve had for a few seasons and felt like we had the right cast to do it this season. The jokers felt like they would only work if they brought something new to the competition, ”said Breen. “I think this is something that we are going to do again.”

He admitted that it was always difficult to launch shows like this and especially in the midst of the pandemic.

Seitchik said some people come for the vocals and others come for the “crazy, elaborate, dreamy” costumes. “This show has something for everyone,” she added. “We have to rise every season to surpass ourselves.”

Jeong himself revealed that The masked singer, based on a Korean format, was much larger than he had ever imagined.

“I didn’t know if it would be unique or not when I started and I’m available when my own sitcom Dr Ken had been canceled. I thought this was something I would do when I was looking for my next TV gig… I didn’t know much, it would be my base and it really is the best TV job I have ever had ”, a- he declared. “I have more creative freedom on this subject than on my own scripted show that I created and wrote.”

When asked who he thinks would win the show, which ends May 26, Jeong joked, “America is going to win for the fifth straight season.
