Following their Golden Globes win, in the Best Original Song – Film category, songwriters Diane Warren and Laura Pausini locked in an Oscar nomination, which recognized “Io Sì”, the original song they wrote for the Italian drama Netflix, Life to come.
While this recognition brought Warren to a total of 12 career names, it turned out to be the first for Pausini, whom her collaborator called “Italy’s best singer.”
“For Italy it’s an honor,” said Pausini. “I am happy to be part of this project because it is a project that we carried out as a family.”
Although Warren is not a newcomer to the Academy Awards, being nominated for her songs never gets old. “It’s so awesome, it really is and so exciting,” she said. “I haven’t won yet, so maybe Laura, you’re my lucky charm here.”
Oscar nominations: “Mank” tops the list with 10 including best picture; Six more films with six; Female Director’s Record Set – The Complete List
Directed by Edoardo Ponti, Life to come focuses on Madame Rosa (Sophia Loren), a Holocaust survivor and former prostitute, who now runs a day care center for the children of “working girls”. After being robbed by a 12-year-old street kid named Momo (Ibrahima Gueye), Rosa reluctantly agrees to take her home, developing a bond with the boy she never could have imagined.
“When I first read the script, it really touched me. It was such a beautiful story of understanding, ”Warren recalls. “The world does not see [the two main characters], but they are these beautiful people, and seeing themselves with their hearts, they love and see each other.
Understandably, given his take on the script, Warren would orient his song for the film around the notion of the universal need to feel seen. “’Seen’ is a very short word, and it means the world,” Pausini said. “Because if you think of the world we live in now, the word ‘seen’ is like a void, like a protection.”
For the Italian singer-songwriter, the song and its message hit particularly close to home right now, given that Italy has just entered lockdown for the third time, amid the Covid pandemic. -19. “It’s really hard,” she said, “and the song still means more than ever.”
On “Io Sì” – the first Oscar nominated song to be sung entirely in Italian – Warren and Pausini share the credit for writing with Niccolò Agliardi.
The couple’s collaboration here will surely not be their last. “Diane is my heart now,” Pausini said. “What more can i say?”
