How cool would it be if a Scorsese movie was made in your hometown?
It has to be very different Pawhuska, Oklahoma, today. See the new film by Martin Scorsese, Murderer of the Flower Moon, is filming there and turning this quiet town into a busy Hollywood production. The movie is set around the turn of the century, and people wander around in costume, sets are decorated, and locations are explored.
“All you need is popcorn and milk duds,” said Kelly Bland, executive director of Osage County Tourism The Oklahoman. She continued, “There is an anticipation … there is something exciting on the horizon that is coming and will happen soon.”
The feeling is mutual. Scorsese said in a statement: “We are very happy to finally be able to start production Murderer of the Flower Moon in Oklahoma … Being able to tell this story in the country where these events took place is incredibly important and vital in order for us to be able to present an accurate representation of the time and people. ”
Cities like this rarely get such an influx of money and attention. Movies shot on location can mean more money is being spent in restaurants, shops, and money that goes straight to the economy. It can mean more jobs and press.
Many local shopkeepers and museum curators said that just by watching the movie, more people are driving and spending money in town. That kind of uptrend is now almost immeasurable after a year of pandemic shutdowns. It’s going to have a lasting impact and is what makes filming outside of Los Angeles so lucrative for cities.
But the $ 200 million movie almost never came to this area. COVID delayed filming, and there were some local concerns that this boom would suffer for the economy and the viability of the site.
Bland said she was concerned when COVID hit and things were delayed, but she shared it The Oklahoman, “In Osage County we believe in a happy ending, and I know this story isn’t one of the happy ending stories. … But from a tourist point of view, I feel that if someone benefits from this film, I should want it the existence Osage Nationbecause they suffered. … they can tell their story and work directly with the film company to make sure it is done in a way that needs to be done. “
