73rd Emmy Awards have a broadcast date: CBS and Television Academy announced Tuesday that this year’s Emmys will air live on Sunday, September 19 at 8 p.m. ET (5 p.m. PT). The ceremony will air on CBS as well as on demand sister streamer Paramount Plus.
The host (s), producers and location of the Emmys, however, will be announced at a later date. The Television Academy also needs to decide how to handle this year’s Creative Arts Emmy Awards and whether it will run over multiple nights like last year, or whether it will revert to the previous setup that ran over two nights on weekends. end before the ceremony during prime time.
A lot can happen in the world between now and September, which is why CBS and TV Academy will likely wait a moment before determining whether it will be safe to bring the Emmys back to some sort of normal event. Last year, ABC aired a mostly virtual Emmys, with host Jimmy Kimmel and a handful of presenters inside Staples Center, and most of the nominees and winners calling remotely.
CBS has no shortage of hosting opportunities for this year’s Emmys, starting with late-night hosts Stephen Colbert and James Corden. Expand the network to other ViacomCBS properties and that could also include Trevor Noah from Comedy Central or Desus & Mero from Showtime. CBS also has “The Equalizer” star Queen Latifah, who is no stranger to accommodation. And it’s right on the top of the head.
The Academy got good marks for its semi-virtual television broadcast Emmys last September; the organization also broadcast the winners of the Creative Arts Emmys at a five-night online event hosted by Nicole Byer. Variety recently spoke with Academy President / COO Maury McIntyre about how this year’s For Your Consideration events will work; read that here.
