Streamer DAZN and Len Blavatnik decline to participate – Deadline

Anger is mounting over reports of a breakaway European Super League, featuring around 16 top football clubs.

Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham are said to be part of the squad. Just like Atletico Madrid in La Liga, Barcelona and Real Madrid and AC Milan in Serie A, Inter Milan and Juventus are involved. None of the clubs have addressed the reports so far.

The move has been widely condemned by national and European football authorities as well as prominent politicians, including British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and French President Emmanuel Macron. Social media has been inundated with criticism of the supposed plan, which most see as undermining football’s national ‘pyramids’ and selling local fans.

World’s biggest football clubs confirm new Super League plan

UEFA has said it will use “all measures” possible to stop the “cynical project”. FIFA has previously said that any player who plays in the Separatist League will be banned from playing at the World Cup.

Sky News’ City editor-in-chief Mark Kleinman said of the project today: “The new league includes huge sums of money that will be given to participating clubs. About $ 5 billion has been committed to this new project by US bank JP Morgan. “

A report from respected sports newspaper Corriere dello Sport claimed today that sports streaming service DAZN, which is owned by billionaire Len Blavatnik’s Access Industries, is working on the formation of the league. The Italian newspaper claimed the streamer was prepared to pay $ 3.5 billion for television rights to the European SuperLeague if it came to fruition.

However, in a statement to Reuters, DAZN strongly rejected the report: “Regarding a report from Corriere dello Sport today, this report and related reports are false. Neither DAZN nor Mr. Blavatnik are in any way involved or interested in entering discussions regarding the creation of a Super League and no conversations have taken place, ”the streamer said.

We have reached out to DAZN and Access Industries for further comment. The latter is well known in the film world for his film investments, and Blavatnik himself has served as an executive producer on films such as Me, Tonya, Hacksaw Ridge and Lee Daniels’ butler. He is the producer of the next Apple movie Tetris, with Taron Egerton. Access Industries acquired Warner Music for $ 3.3 billion in 2011 and Access Entertainment hired former BBC chief Danny Cohen as chairman in 2016.

Last month, Serie A clubs granted DAZN the main domestic rights to the Italian football championship for the next three seasons.

The implications of a European Super League are vast. Quite simply, his roster would mark the biggest upheaval in world football in decades, perhaps ever. The implications for global broadcasters would in turn be enormous.

Naturally, broadcasters such as Sky, BT Sport and the BBC in the UK, all of which have major stakes in broadcasting the Premier League and the UEFA Champions League (which is expected to announce its own structural reshuffle tomorrow), are glued to this developing story. Just like the media around the world.

There have been reports that the breakaway clubs may issue a statement tonight, but so far none have been released. There is also speculation that the clubs at the heart of the proposal are using the rumors to strengthen their hand when it comes to the ongoing negotiations over the broadcast rights to existing tournaments.

A number of leading football pundits have expressed dismay tonight, and some have expressed doubts that the plans could ever get started given the apparent levels of hostility towards them.
