Focus Features announced on Friday that it will release its dramatic thriller Still water, directed by Projector Oscar winner Tom McCarthy and starring Matt Damon, in theaters July 30, 2021.
The photo, from Participant and DreamWorks, centers on an American roughneck from the Oklahoma oil rig (Damon) who travels to Marseille to visit his estranged daughter (Abigail Breslin), in prison for a murder qu ‘she claims not to have committed. Confronted with language barriers, cultural differences and a complicated legal system, he built a new life in France by giving himself the personal mission of exonerating it. Camille Cottin also plays the main role.
The screenplay is by McCarthy & Marcus Hinchey and Thomas Bidegain & Noé Debré. The late Steve Golin is a producer along with McCarthy, Jonathan King and Liza Chasin.
Focus originally lined up the film for a November 2020 platform release ahead of the pandemic exhibit. Now things are picking up speed again: so far, on this date, Disney has been rerouted Jungle cruise with Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt and David Lowery’s The green knight from A24.
The move comes after Focus dated its Edgar Wright documentary The Sparks Brothers for June 18. The specialist label Universal has also aligned Ben Sharrock’s Limbo for April 30 and Kenneth Branagh Belfast for November 12.
