Steven Spielberg’s childhood movie exploits Seth Rogen as uncle – Deadline

EXCLUSIVE: Steven Spielberg’s upcoming feature is gaining momentum as he found the next A-lister to join the film set which is loosely based on the director’s childhood in Arizona. Sources tell Deadline that Seth Rogen is set to play young Spielberg’s favorite uncle in the untitled photo of Amblin who already has Michelle Williams on board to play a role inspired by Spielberg’s mother, but with a distinct and original voice.

Considering the personality of the story, this will also mark the first time since 2001 AI that Spielberg will participate in the screenwriting duties, co-writing the screenplay with Tony Kushner, who has written several Spielberg films. Filming on the film will begin this summer with the hope of being released in 2022. Spielberg, Kushner and Kristie Macosko Krieger are producers.

As with everything Spielberg, the casting process has been extremely secretive, leading the city to wonder who would land those coveted roles from family and friends that inspired the filmmaker growing up. With the adult roles reunited, Spielberg will now look to play the remaining roles, which include children of multiple age levels, one of whom will play the role inspired by the young storyteller.

Over the years, Spielberg has talked about how growing up in Arizona was an inspiration to so many of his films, from story themes to actual characters. The 2017 HBO Documentary Spielberg was the closest to delving into his past, but this will be the first time Spielberg is truly able to give a perspective on the early years of a cinema’s greatest storytellers.

As for Rogen, he continues to be one of the busiest figures in the business on various fronts and has now added the entrepreneur to his list of credits. Rogen and his Point Gray partner Evan Goldberg recently launched Houseplant, a cannabis and housewares company in the United States; previously it was only available in Canada. The launch was so successful that the website crashed due to the demand.

On the film front, Rogen recently starred and produced Far shot as well as Oscar nominees The disaster artist. On the TV front, Point Gray is in production on the third season of the hit Amazon series. The boys, which has also just announced a fallout.

In addition to all this, Rogen will publish his first book on May 11, Phone book, a collection of short stories.

He is represented by UTA, Marsha McManus and the law firm Felker Toczek.
