South East European Film Festivals team for the online event – Deadline

A group of film festivals from the former Yugoslavia have teamed up to launch an online event that they hope will boost the circulation and promotion of independent European film as the pandemic continues.

The plan was initiated by the Sarajevo Film Festival alongside the Belgrade Author’s Film Festival (Serbia), the Zagreb Film Festival (Croatia) and the Herceg Novi / Montenegro Film Festival (Montenegro).

The event, which runs from April 9 to 17, will feature an online program of films already screened at festivals such as Cannes, Venice, Berlin and Sarajevo. A program called European Discovery will see a selection of previous European box office hits compete for the European Discovery Prize, voted on by audiences at the network’s four festivals. There will also be a Yugoslav Classics program that will shine a line on local titles.

Mirsad Purivatra, director of the Sarajevo Film Festival, said “increased solidarity” was needed to help festivals and the industry at large overcome the pandemic.

“In our already fragile cultural market, the repercussions of the pandemic period will be severe, and we believe that only by working together can we ensure that the future of our entire industry will be bright,” he said. he commented. “We are happy to take festival activity in our region to a new level of cooperation thanks to this great partnership with other festivals that share our passion for cinema. The guiding principles of this network are to give priority to our audiences, to guarantee the excellent quality of the content and to guarantee access to it. Our goals are to bring the best European content to as many people as possible in our region, not only locally, but also through a variety of platforms, and to increase appreciation of the film across generations.
