Shonda Rhimes on fan reaction to Regé-Jean Page ‘Bridgerton’ release – Deadline

On April 2, fans reacted with dismay when Netflix announced that Bridgerton Regé-Jean Page’s escape would be leaving the series – and now, Shonda Rhimes has weighed in.

In a Vanity Fair article on Tuesday, Rhimes joined fellow producer Betsy Beers in a conversation, noting that the reaction was not what she would have anticipated. “I was really shocked because it usually happens when I have killed someone who has been around for a while. Like, we didn’t kill him, he’s still alive! she said. “Every season, our job is to find the right people and bring about this amazing, world-changing romance. I don’t know if I expected such an explosion, considering that every book [in the Bridgerton series] is another romance. “

The reaction left Rhimes wondering what the actor’s character, Duke of Hastings Simon Bassett, would do if he returned for Season 2, alongside Phoebe Dynevor’s Daphne Bridgerton. (Dynevor will, in fact, be back in the coming season.) “What would be the end of this combo?” she said. “We gave them their happiness forever! And now we have this next couple coming up. And so yeah, I was like, whoa!

In the interview, the producer noted that she often had to kill popular characters during her last 20 years in show business. “It’s our job… it’s to find guys. I mean, I hope women do too, but finding men that our audiences find terribly attractive and that they get incredibly too attached to, ”said the founder of Shondaland, who was also behind shows such as Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal, “And they get mad… when we move them in any way.”

News of Page’s release first broke on Netflix’s Twitter account, in the form of a letter written by Bridgerton Lady Whistledown character. Following the announcement, Rhimes wrote on Instagram: “Remember: the duke never left. He’s just waiting to be watched again. #ShondalandMenOnNetflixAreForever. “

While Page’s turn in the period drama propelled him onto the world stage, as an actor to watch his character never intended to appear in the series, after the end of season 1, according to sources familiar with the matter. Deadline learns that given Page’s immense popularity, an effort was made to bring the actor back for the guest star role in Season 2, but the deal never materialized. Still, the character will be supposed to be referenced in the series, in the future.

Created by Chris Van Dusen, Bridgerton is based on a series of novels by Julia Quinn. Taking a look at lust for wealth and betrayal in the context of Regency-era England, through the eyes of the powerful Bridgerton family, the series was recently renewed for a third and fourth season.

With the series in the rearview mirror, Page has already lined up his next projects. He will star alongside Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans in Joe and Anthony Russo’s action thriller The gray man, and will also appear in Dungeons and dragons, from directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein.
