Joe Biden may have just taken his first steps in the presidency, but the Trump administration numbers don’t seem to be going anywhere yet. Donald Trump’s personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani made headlines on Monday as Dominion Voting Systems filed a defamation suit demanding $ 1.3 billion.
The former New York mayor’s latest legal issue has become the butt of late-night jokes, including those from Seth Meyers who used his “A Closer Look” segment to insert jokes and criticism of Giuliani and the GOP.
“Fortunately he is a vampire because he will have to spend the rest of his life working on it,” the Late Night with Seth Meyers host joked. “He has no money, remember how he couldn’t afford hair dye and just rubbed his head with a typewriter?”
While it can be easy to laugh at Giuliani’s public moments, like that of Four Seasons Total Landscaping, Meyers said Giuliani was not the only one sharing unsubstantiated allegations of voter fraud. Meyers has also attacked a number of GOP figures, who he says continue to hold on to Trump.
A handful of Republicans including Marco Rubio and Rand Paul still fail to denounce allegations of rigged or stolen elections, and have found no fault in the former president’s incitement to violence on the U.S. Capitol. Meyers said these politicians “have made it clear that they refuse to hold Trump responsible” for a list of problems, including the botched handling of the coronavirus pandemic. Although the country has undergone a change in leadership, Meyers added that the GOP will remain the same.
“The Republican Party hasn’t learned anything and still hasn’t changed,” he said. “It is still the party that elected Donald Trump and supported him as he tried to foment sedition.
