The first one Saturday Night Live The 2021 Cold Open featured Cecily Strong as Marjorie Taylor Greene, the QAnon member-turned-congresswoman whose conspiracy theorizing has become a source of endless media fascination.
The set-up was Greene guest on a talk show, What always works, with the host (Kate McKinnon) asking her, “What are some of the theories that you believe in that have been promoted?”
“Okay, first of all, I think the Parkland shooting was a hoax,” Greene says. “The teachers were actors and the children were dolls. I believe September 11 was a hoax. Has anyone actually seen this happen? I also told my supporters that they should physically assassinate Nancy Pelosi. This lady I work with. And it’s a new one that just came out: I think the California wildfires were caused by Jewish space lasers.

“So there are lasers in space that cause forest fires, and the lasers identify themselves as Jews?”
“Correct,” Greene said confidently.
Ultimately, the jokes aren’t too far removed from reality, as reports point to Greene’s past social media posts and other statements. On Saturday, the office of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued a press release accusing House Republican Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy of failing to take action against Greene and “rewarding her.” With a spot on the House Education and Budget Committee.
Strong portrayed her with a kind of quirky arrogance that was seen in some of Greene’s real-life clips, including one in which she berated Parkland shooting survivor David Hogg.
What always works then introduced guests to Pete Davidson, as GameStop’s new majority shareholder, which has seen its price soar this week amid a Reddit-inspired revolt against hedge funds; then the long bearded Jack Dorsey (Kyle Mooney) and Mark Zuckerberg (Mikey Day), defending the way their platforms have handled disinformation.
At one point, Dorsey asks the host if his beard, which he wore during congressional hearings, “works”.
“It works to keep me a lesbian,” says the host.
Next, Kenan Thompson as OJ Simpson, wearing an ankle bracelet, explained how he managed to get himself vaccinated against Covid-19, although it has always been a challenge for elderly Americans to receive it.
“Guilty as charged … for the vaccine,” said Simpson.
The skit ended with John Krasinski as Tom Brady, who, according to the host, “might be the only thing in America that still works.”
“So I guess everyone’s cheering you on, aren’t they?” she says.
“Hardly anyone,” Brady says.
“Well, I’m going to cheer you on Tom Brady, because you’re the only fucking thing this country can count on.” And it’s not like you’re some weird Trump guy or anything, right?
Then Brady sheepishly said, “Thanks for inviting me.”
The host then ends. “I was Kate McKinnon because I’m slowly losing my mind with you all.
