So many careers have been influenced or changed by racism.
Salma Hayek is one of the biggest stars in Hollywood. After breaking into the mainstream in DesperadoShe has had a long career with films like The Eternals coming out soon.
But Hayek had to fight for every role she got, especially in the early days of Hollywood. Inew Variety show cover storyHayek talks about what it was like as a Mexican-American actress in Hollywood.
She began, “I remember auditioning two great comedies for the lead role. After that, the directors told me that I was the best auditioner and that I was better than who they were casting and that they regretted it. But then they knew that the studios hadn’t chosen a Mexican for their lead. ”
Although we didn’t get the titles of the comedies discussed, Hayek said, “I was very pleased with them coming up to me and telling me because I thought it was very brave of them. And I thought it changed something. It changed something about them. It made [me think that] Maybe the next generation or the next girl who walks in would get a better shot as a result. ”
She also faces sexism, she said.
“If you’re a woman and you’re in a movie that is very successful and you say you’re their favorite character, still give the man all the box office credits,” she said. “You don’t count who you bring into the theater. In my case, I was already a very big star in my country. I brought the Latino market to theaters. I know some of the studios knew that. But they didn’t want to accept the value of the Latino market back then. ”
Hayek’s story tells a story too familiar in Hollywood lore. In addition to being great at what they do, actors need to overcome so much sexism and racism in Hollywood that it is a wonder everyone can achieve longevity in their careers.
