Sabrina Carpenter ‘Answer Song’ in Disney Drama – Deadline

This week, a very old tradition in the recording industry took center stage. We’re talking, of course, about the answer song.

Response recordings are songs that “respond” to a previous recording by a different artist, sometimes addressing a specific incident directly, other times playing on its themes. Novelty has been around for decades, ranging from blues and R&B to country and hip-hop, and is often a gender response.

The trick was originally designed to capture the sales momentum of the original song. He’s rarely achieved the same success, but has certainly given fans and the industry something to hang on to following a hit.

For example, the 1963 song by Andrea Carroll, It hurts to be sixteen, was the response to Neil Sedaka’s recording Happy birthday, Sweet Sixteen. In this case, Sales Specialist Sedaka wrote the tune for the two, using different lyricists to convey the different perspectives.

Most popular was Back to the USSR., a 1968 Beatles song that answered Chuck Berry’s Back in the USA There is also Lynyrd Skynyrd’s Sweet Home Alabama, the answer to Neil Young Southern man. He rebuked Young thus:

Well I heard Mister Young sing on her
Well I heard old Neil put her down
Well I hope Neil Young will remember
A southerner don’t need him anyway

Most recently, Sia’s 2014 song Big girls cry was the answer to Fergie Big girls don’t cry, while Katy Perry’s Californian girls with Snoop Dogg responded to Jay-Z and Alicia Keys with their New York tribute, State of mind of the empire. It was the first time that the original songs and the answer hit. # 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart.

In this last round, Sabrina Carpenter Skin is, according to widespread fan speculation, the answer song to Olivia Rodrigo Driver’s license.

Rodrigo, who starred in Disney’s High school musical: the series, started her song about a lost love and reached number 1. The lyrics say that she saw her ex move on. But it also contained a perceived dig as to who he was going with: “And you’re probably with that blonde girl / Who always made me doubt / She’s so much older than me / She’s everything I’m not sure.

Fans identified “the blonde girl” as Carpenter. (known for the Disney show Girl meets the world and Netflix Work it). Carpenter is blonde and is four years older than Rodrigo.

Carpenter’s response was swift. Two weeks after Rodrigo’s release, she responded with Skin, referring to someone trying to ‘get under my skin’.

“You said your side / So I’ll say mine” and “Maybe” blonde “was the only rhyme,” Carpenter wrote. She added: “” You can try / To go under my, under my, under my skin / While it’s on mine / Yeah, all on my, all on my, all on my skin / I would have liked let you know that even you / Can won’t leave me under my skin if I don’t let you in.

So far, none of the singers have commented. If the tradition of response recordings holds, this is probably where it stays.
