‘Red Summer’ producer Trailblazer Studios switches to podcasting with ‘American Sport’ – Deadline

EXCLUSIVE: Trailblazer Studios, one of the companies behind Dawn Porter’s Tulsa Massacre documentary Red Summer for Nat Geo, is getting into podcasting.

The production is launching this movement with the launch of American Sport, a story of how the sport became an indelible part of the American experience.

The show, which premieres April 21, is hosted by Matt Andrews, one of the nation’s foremost sports history teachers.

American sport explore the sporting events that have defined our culture and changed the course of American history. The plan then is to adapt the podcast, and other future podcasts in the sports, social justice and real crime genres, into TV series.

American sport was developed and created by Matt Andrews. Katye Rone and Jeff Lanter are executive producers. Casey Helmick is a consultant producer, with Aurelia Belfield as producer.

Andrews said: “In American Sport, We will explore how Americans have used sports such as baseball, basketball, boxing, track and field, and horse racing to claim group pride as well as racial, ethnic and sexual superiority. But I’ll also tell you how other Americans have used these same sports to challenge these claims. These “us versus them” debates in the history of American sport have at times resulted in the loss of lives. As you’ll hear from our podcast, sports aren’t just frivolous games and distractions. This is serious business.

“Expansion into podcasting allows us to be creatively agile and amplify our voice in the quality scripted, non-fictional landscape,” added Jeff Lanter, president and COO of Trailblazer Studios. “It also allows us to tell the stories we want to tell beyond the limits of linear television.”
