Matt hooks (The obscure life of the Grand Duke of Corsica) will play the lead role, alongside boxing enthusiast Ray Winstone (Black Widow) as Bill Warr, an avid pugilist who becomes both the trainer and surrogate father of the film’s main character, Jem Belcher. Marton Csokas (Lighting), Jodhi May (The witcher), Steven Berkoff (Vikings), Julian Glover (Game of thrones) and William Moseley (Artemis Fowl). Additional players are in talks.

The film will tell the little-known true story of boxer James Belcher, whose journey to becoming the world’s youngest boxing champion at the age of nineteen in 1800 helped transform primitive pugilism into the sport of boxing such as we know it today. Growing up in poverty and surrounded by violence and addiction, “Jem” is saved by a benevolent mentor and the discipline of boxing, becoming one of England’s most exciting sportsmen. But when a terrible accident happens to him, leaving him blind in one eye and unable to defend his title, he returns to the ways of his past, triggering a destructive fall. He finds himself defeated but, refusing to give up, slowly finds a path to recovery to reclaim his title and a place in history as a pioneer of the sport.

Marvel’s ‘black widow’ adds Ray Winstone

The film will be produced by Camelot Films (The obscure life of the Grand Duke of Corsica), Chris Hardman (visual effects on Blade Runner 2049) by Hardman Pictures and Richard Holmes (The ritual) by Big Rich Films. The film will be produced by Matthew Chausse and Norman Merry.

Pic will be directed by Daniel Graham who most recently wrote and directed The obscure life of the Grand Duke of Corsica, the black comedy starring Timothy Spall and Peter Stormare. Prizefighter: The Life of Jem Belcher marks his third feature film as a director.

Hookings said, “This is the movie every boxing fan has been waiting for because it tells the story for the first time about the true origins of the modern sport they love. Jem’s life was tragic and unique yet very inspiring and should take its place in history as a true forgotten hero.

Director Graham added, “As a director, I’m fascinated by characters who find unconventional ways of doing things, even if that means sowing the seed of their own destruction. Prizefighter is an immensely exciting opportunity to bring my vision to life in the midst of a pivotal moment in English history.

Producer Richard Holmes said, “Matt Hookings, Daniel Graham and the film crew are making an original, passionate and inspiring film. A film that shows what it takes to be a champion in any business, the courage and focus to succeed against all odds. It’s so wonderful to have now the approval of such a great acting talent that also supports this vision.
