The Portkey BM5 WR is a 5.5 inch monitor with built-in wireless control developed for RED Komodo.
Portkeys is one of our favorite brands when it comes to powerful on-camera monitors. Their straightforward, budget-friendly solutions make it easy to monitor while taking photos in the field or in your cozy home studio.
Indeed, hers LH5 The series is perfect for many mirrorless setups with a bright 1700nit monitor for only $ 399.
But like any other company, innovation is key to growth, and Portkeys introduced the BM5 series, which includes the BM5 iii and the newly announced BM5 WR. The difference between the two is that the BM5 WR has a built-in wireless control module that you can use to control that RED Komodo wireless. Let’s take a look.
The BM5 WR has a 5.5 “bright 2200nit monitor with a resolution of 1920 x 1080. And we already know what you’re thinking. Is it 8-bit, 8 + 2FRC, or 10-bit? Well, Johnny Ringo, it’s 8 + 2 FRC. For connections, it has an HDMI input and a 3G-SDI input / output. Although the monitor does not have an HDMI loop, it does support HDMI to SDI output. For longer runs, SDI is often preferred. The SDI and HDMI inputs both support up to 1920×1080 60p.
Like the BM5 iii, it has all of the standard wizard tools we expected, including Focus assistant, exposure assistant, zebra, histogram, waveform, vectorscope, image overlay, image capture, audio meters, 3D LUT and a new peaking focus assistant. Portkeys says the new algo “can Capture the subtle face focus precisely “and” IRE can be freely adjusted for ARRI false colors. ”
What sets the BM5 WR apart from the BM5 iii is the wireless control. With the built-in module you can establish a connection to the RED Komodo via Wi-Fi to control various functions via touchscreen in real time. Parameters like recording, iris, shutter, ISO and autofocus.
While the RED monitor only supports Komodo over WiFi, the BM5 WR can control multiple cameras over a wired connection, including the Blackmagic URSA mini cameras, the Canon C70, Sony a7S III, Z CAM and more. The device can also control Blackmagic pocket cameras wirelessly via a Bluetooth connection. We can see portkeys adding more cameras in the future.
The BM5 WR consists of a housing made of an aluminum alloy and has a touchscreen against fingerprints to ensure that it is free from contamination. It also has 1 / 4-20 “connectors on the top and bottom of the device and multiple cable connections for camera control (LANC, USB, Multi).
