A Varun Chakkilam collection has always presented a glamorous and dazzling look on the catwalks. For FDCI x Lakmé Fashion Week, the designer unveiled his “Art Nouveau” line for spring / summer 2021 intended for the sensual and mysterious woman. The muse of Varun has always been the woman who respects ancient artisanal offerings and appreciates the rich beauty of nature.
The collection was inspired by the artistic movement of the 18th century which was a glorious period in history. Keeping inspiration in creative focus, Varun chose an art-friendly color card. There was the ever-popular feminine pink, while the tranquil green and mustard created variety, but the teal brought nuances of serene appeal.
The show was stopped by the very elegant Pooja Hegde who looked ethereal in a blue and white lehenga, heavily adorned with cascading embroidery, worn with a small ornate choli and matching dupatta. The pure dupatta looked absolutely gorgeous with heavy, intricate blue and white embroidery and cropped short choli. She kept her makeup fresh with natural blush and soft, wavy hair cascading down her back. She looked breathtaking.
The look spelled opulence in all its grandeur as hand-embroidered bustiers looked magical when worn with voluminous skirts, while sleek, bodycon dresses were showered with a shower of sequins. The details appeared in the form of bespoke peplums as well as beautifully visualized curtains to present a flatter feminine image.
The lehenga, choli and dupatta embellished trios looked gorgeous with their gorgeous embroidery, while the spaghetti strap dress, pre-sewn saree, embroidered kurti on the draped lungi, and ruffled dupatta paired with choli and lehenga from corset style; added to the greatness of the collection. Some eye-catching additions were the cape cut over a teal print lehenga and choli, while the angled midi kurta hem on the long skirt showcased the formal elegance.
Bringing only three designs of ethnic men’s clothing, Varun limited them to the pale green tone for sherwani, button sans, bundgala, jacket, kurta, bundi and elegant dupatta.
Varun Chakkilam’s “Art Nouveau” collection was a dazzling blend of eras and traditions that would become timeless pieces for fashion lovers.
