Oscar Lists Revealed in Nine Categories – Read All Lists – Deadline

The Oscar lists are divided into nine categories, including International Film, Feature Documentary, Music and Song, Makeup and Hairstyle, Visual Effects, and Shorts. These are the first indicator of strength in the race for the 93rd annual Oscars, and while the lists contain few real surprises, it’s especially good news for those movies that get mentioned more than once.

Netflix holiday movie leads the pack with three mentions apiece Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey (for song, score and makeup and hairstyle), David Fincher’s Mank (Sheet music, makeup, visual effects) and Disney’s Mulan (Sheet music, song and visual effects).

“The films each receiving two mentions are The little things, a night in Miami, the birds of prey, the life to come, the midnight sky, Minari, the soul, the one and only Ivan, the trial of Chicago 7 and Principle. Chile also doubled in the Feature Documentary and International Feature Film categories. Mole agent and Romania Collective. Additionally, Amazon’s Stacey Abrams document, All In: The struggle for democracy, landed names for Docu Feature and its original song, “Turntables. ” The nominee for the feature documentary was particularly unusual Welcome to Chechnya, which also landed a very rare mention among the 10 finalists for visual effects. Is this the first time that a documentary falls under this last category?

Season Notes: Bill Murray “Rocks” Oscar Season; Personal memories of Christopher Plummer

Visual effects is a category hit hard by the pandemic, with major studios removing so many tentpole films from eligibility this year. This made room for an eclectic group of suitors who also include animation. Soul, in the same way Mulan and The one and only Ivan – all from disney – and earlier versions of 2020 such as Birds of prey, Vin Diesel movie Bloodshot and Love and monsters. As expected, Christopher Nolan’s Principle made the cut, but oddly enough the Warners superhero entry Wonder Woman 1984 was completely ruled out, as were two films by Tom Hanks with powerful effects: Doggy style and News from the world.

Oscar Selection: Full Deadline Coverage

The Original Song category could provide some interesting moments on Oscar Night if all five of the ultimate nominees are performed on the show. Among the 15 who made the initial cut are novelty items like “Wuhan Flu” from Next Borat movie and “Husavik” from Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of the Fire Saga. Wouldn’t it be interesting to see Sacha Baron Cohen and Will Ferrell show up to sing these tunes live? But the former, which has nine credited writers including Cohen, should almost certainly put ABC’s beep button on high alert. Diane Warren is the only songwriter on the list with two competing – with songs from Life to come and The one and only Ivan – giving him a great opportunity to break his famous Oscar losing streak in 11 previous nominations. Justin Timberlake and Andra Day are among the big names whose tunes have been left out this year; Day’s “Tigress and Tweed”, by The United States vs. Billie Holiday, was considered a favorite, with Golden Globe and Critics Choice nominations to his credit.

The Academy has also narrowed down the scope for live action and documentary shorts and animated shorts. Interestingly, among the short documentaries there is a charming Netflix entry called What would Sophia Loren do? about an entire New York woman’s love for the Italian icon, yet another tie this year with Loren’s return to the screen in The life to come – who, as stated, landed on AMPAS shortlists for song and sheet music. If you ask me, that should have been the Italian entry for the international feature film and easily made the cut there. Instead, Italy submitted the shortlisted non-international film Notturno, although he did the preliminary cut for Documentary Feature.

The full Oscar nominations will be announced on March 15, and ABC will live stream the 93rd Academy Awards on April 25.
