The Odisha government has approved Rs 200 crore for the redevelopment of the historic Kalinga studio here, an official said on Wednesday. The government has decided to create an ultramodern cinematographic center at Studio Kalinga.
The Odisha Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation (IDCO) would be the executing agency for the redevelopment.
This was decided at a high-level meeting held under the chairmanship of Secretary-General Suresh Chandra Mohapatra here on Wednesday.
Mohapatra decided to develop it as a futuristic, state-of-the-art studio with competitive business models.
The chief secretary ordered the industry department to go ahead with the bidding process for the completion of earthworks at the base level before the monsoon.
The goal has been set to complete construction and landscaping of the main support area by December 2022.
Development Commissioner Pardeep Kumar Jena asked the department to define the details of investment, employment potential and income generation timeline to make the unit rewarding and sustainable in the competitive world of technology in rapid evolution.
“Currently, the Kalinga studio is located almost in the heart of the capital on an area of approximately 26 acres. With its nostalgic heritage and lucrative track, it can be transformed into a modern cinema center with promising future prospects, ”said Secretary of Industries Hemant Kumar Sharma.
Sharma presented a redevelopment plan estimated at around Rs 200 crore which was approved at the meeting. It was decided that the new studio would be developed with three main areas.
Zone 1 would have facilities such as interior filming rooms, filming façades, a central courtyard, a film technology zone, a commercial space and a cafeteria.
Zone 2 is said to have outdoor shooting facilities, film locations, themed shooting gardens, children’s areas, castle views, a snow world, and an adventure playground.
Zone 3 would have boarding and accommodation facilities in a food court for the film crew, space for a social and wedding destination, etc.
