‘Nomadland’, ‘Minari’, ‘The Father’ – Deadline

While now isn’t quite the time to grab a box office victory round with just 3.1k theaters open out of the 5.8K US and Canada, five of the top eight Oscar nominated images on the Last weekend in theaters reaped the halo. Monday names effect.

Keep in mind that many performers, especially in the New York and Los Angeles awards centers, are operating at 25% capacity. This limits and really hurts arthouse titles, as they typically have fewer performance hours and rely on full auditoriums, especially at prime times such as 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. for older crowds. Landmark on Pico is still not open, but the arthouse chain reopened its Nuart site on Friday with Sony Pictures Classic The father and A24 Minari. Still, the reopening of arthouse theaters in both cities couldn’t have come at a better time as they can capitalize on Oscar contenders, especially given the ceremony’s late date of April 25.

The five Oscar nominated photos for theatrical release –The father, Minari, Warner Bros. ‘ Judas and the Black Messiah, Projector Nomadland, and Focus Features’ Promising young woman may have seen leaps in theater counts, thanks to the reopening of LA (which was the # 1 market this past weekend with over $ 1M in revenue so far), and therefore largely their BO hikes True, we don’t see anything crossover, because we don’t have the exposure bandwidth in the US to do it, but the specialty distributors will take what they can get.

Projector Pictures

Searchlight refuses to make earnings for its six-time Oscar nominee Nomadland who made history Monday with a stage name for Chloe Zhao becoming the first woman of color to land one. Searchlight believes that it is impossible for the industry to interpret the soundtrack of the photo, especially since the film is available for free to Hulu subscribers. My take? I think specialty distributor Disney doesn’t want to paint their Oscar nominee with bad box office headlines. However, everyone knows that the box office as a whole is not doing well and that the numbers posted by all of these Oscar contenders are as good as it gets. Really, Searchlight, stop being embarrassed and start reporting your box office when you join the guilty ranks of those streamers that don’t bring in numbers i.e. Amazon (which has The sound of metal nominated for Best Picture for a total of six Oscar names) and Netflix which has Mank (ten names including the best film) and The Chicago 7 trial (six names including Best Pic).

Why am I bringing up such a story here? Because, Searchlight, according to industry estimates, Nomadland given the biggest winnings of any Oscar nominee for Best Picture, + 157% last weekend with an estimate $ 302.5K in 1050 theaters (+650) during its 7th weekend for a total smoke that is approaching $ 2 million. While tiny by pre-pandemic, it’s something boastful during Oscar season, especially compared to other competition here. But seriously, Searchlight, keep hiding your fat ones! (I am sarcastic). Nomadland also has nominations for Best Actress (Frances McDormand), Film Editing, Adapted Screenplay and Cinematography.

A24 Minari saw a jump of 504 on his 6th theater weekend at 786, which 131% boost in his BO weekend with $ 306,000 and a cumulative total of $ 1.4M. The film directed by Lee Isaac Chung is also available on PVOD.
