Actor Suniel Shetty, who has been in Bollywood for three decades now, says his problem isn’t with being typed but playing it safe.
The 59-year-old star made her Bollywood debut in 1992 with the action drama “Balwan”, and was quickly named an action hero. Over the years he has made his mark in the genre with films such as “Mohra”, “Border”, “Kaante” and “Sapoot” among others.
Suniel Shetty also showed his versatility by playing the funnyman (series “Hera Pheri”, “Awara Paagal Deewaana”), the romantic anti-hero (“Dhadkan”), the quirky protagonist (“Hu Tu Tu”), and the ‘strange villainous role (“Main Hoon Na”).
In the new generation, actors as diverse as Tiger Shroff and Ayushmann Khurrana have stood out by sticking to a particular type of cinema. In elaborating on this, Suniel Shetty told IANS, “I guess over a period of time, whether it’s Ayushmann Khurrana or Tiger Shroff, they’ll start experimenting as well. What is very important is to have an image and they have an accurate image for themselves. These two names can only be appreciated, hats off to them.
“My problem is not typed, my problem is to play it safe. It’s not the subject that affects me as much as the banners you choose to go with like “I’ll only work with XYZ”, “who’s the director?” It means you don’t have your own judgment, ”he said.
“Keep Ayushmann and Tiger out of this lot because they went with topics, directors and not just banners,” said the actor, who hosted a show called “21 Din Wellness In last month. “on BIG FM.
Suniel believes that the actors of the new generation should create an individual style. “No risk (means) that you are not an actor in my opinion. Create your own style. Look at Tiger, Ayushmann, Salman, they are all made by yourself. We were all self-taught. Yes, we made mistakes, but there was Akshay Kumar and Ajay Devgn, who came out brilliantly, ”he said.
He added: “There was a Suniel Shetty who failed after a few years because he believed in the subject but the marketing failed.”
Shetty believes her trip to Bollywood will help her son Ahan lead the way, now that the latter is ready to enter Bollywood. “What I’m trying to say is I’m talking about the box office. We start with the box office and how people react. No one will risk a Rs 50 crore movie with Suniel Shetty today, but they will risk a Rs 500 crore movie with Akshay Kumar. Like I said, I made some mistakes but that’s fine. This experience will probably be used by my son, ”he said.
Suniel is happy with the way his Bollywood run has taken shape. “It’s an incredible trip. I’m grateful, that’s all I can say, ”he concluded.
