EXCLUSIVE: Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (The iron Throne) and Joe Cole (Peaky blinders) lead the cast of Against the ice, a survival film produced by Baltasar Kormákur (Everest) for Netflix.
The photo is a passionate project for Emmy nominee Coster-Waldau, who wrote the screenplay with co-writer Joe Derrick, adapted from the original Danish novel Two against the ice.
The English-language film is produced by RVK Studios of Kormákur, the Icelandic production company behind the Netflix original series. Katla and newly announced Trapped. It is also the first project by Coster-Waldau and Derrick’s fledgling production company, Ill Kippers, to go into production.
In 1909, the Danish expedition to Alabama led by Captain Ejnar Mikkelsen (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) attempted to refute the United States’ claim to northeast Greenland, a claim that was rooted in the idea that Greenland was divided into two parts of land. Leaving their crew behind with the ship, Mikkelsen hangs out on the ice with his inexperienced crew member, Iver Iversen (Joe Cole).

The two manage to find proof that Greenland is an island, but the return to the ship takes longer and is much more difficult than expected. Struggling with extreme hunger, fatigue and a polar bear attack, they finally manage to find their ship crushed in ice and the camp abandoned.
The under-the-radar project recently completed filming in Iceland and Greenland. Additional cast includes Charles Dance (The crown) and Heida Reed (Poldark). Danish director Peter Flinth directs.
The team includes DoP Torben Forsberg, phonograph Pétur Einarsson and publisher Morten Hojbjerg (The crown). Oscar nominated Volker Bertelmann composes the score.
Netflix will be released in 2021.
“Against the ice has been a passionate project for me from the very beginning. It combines a lot of themes that excite me: adventure, Greenland, camaraderie, loyalty and love. It’s an intense exploration of two men, two opposites, trapped in an epic and dangerous setting, ”said Coster-Waldau.
“It was an honor when David Kosse asked me to join the team of Against the ice and take the helm as the lead producer. The true story of Mikkelsen and Iversen caught my attention from the start, ”Kormákur added.
“We jumped at the chance to bring this incredibly compelling story to the screens. Working with the talented Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Joe Derrick, Peter Flinth and Baltasar Kormákur and seeing their creative vision take shape as they brought this living story and its characters to life has been an exciting journey to be part of, ”added Claire Willats, Director, International Original Film, EMEA.
