NFL Draft Day 1 first-time viewer oscars; Down 2020 – Deadline

The initial drama of the first day of the 2021 NFL Draft may have been the fate of Aaron Rodgers and wondering who still listens to Kings of Leon, but the endgame was very sweet for Roger Goodell, Trey Lance and the Walt Disney Company.

Aired with full hype for an America that could turn the corner on the coronavirus pandemic, ABC, ESPN and NFL Network captured 12.5 million prime-time viewers on Thursday.

Or in a way that Vegas punters and network executives will understand and be amazed, it’s 20% better in terms of overall audiences than the 93rd Academy Awards on ABC on April 25.

This is the first time the NFL Draft has surpassed the Oscars.

2021 NFL draft: long delay before first pick, but welcome return to semi-par

Usually the biggest non-Super Bowl draw of the televised season, the Oscars fell dramatically from the previous low in 2020 to end up near snakebelly level with just over 10 million. listening. figuratively and sometimes literally shipped across America because of Covid-19.

Now, the first round of this year’s NFL Draft was still down almost 17% from last year’s high numbers, as even the prospect of live sports looked like a partial vaccine in and of itself. Still, being the second most-watched day of Draft Day 1 and the best Thursday draw on TV isn’t a mockery either, all things considered.

The nearly 8 million views the live project has recorded on digital platforms YouTube, TikTok, Twitter, Facebook and ESPN add to the mix. Translating into a real-time look at consumer habits and choices, this represents a 50% increase over the streaming results for Day 1 of the 2020 NFL Draft.

Returning to the linear bench, ESPN was the leader with 6.5 sets of sports fan eyeballs. ABC arrived with 4.1 million viewers and NFL Network got 1.9 million. Even as the draft continues tonight, Commissioner Goodell’s weekend is certain that the NFL-owned outlet was the only one to see a rise in 2020 – 130,000 more viewers to be exact.

With all of this, the NFL is a local game as much as it is coast to coast and the local markets looked strong for the 32-team league – as you can see below:

As for the Oscar bombing going on… maybe a studio or a streamer needs to make a pro-football movie next year. It couldn’t hurt.
