NFL Adds 17th Regular Season Game, Sets Los Angeles SoFi Stadium for Super Bowl 2022 – Deadline

NFL owners have voted to add a 17th regular-season game to the schedule for the next campaign – the first time the schedule has increased in more than 40 years.

The league is also reducing the number of preseason games from four to three.

Official confirmation of the long-awaited measures comes days after the league agreed to a ten-year rights deal with mainstream media companies as well as Amazon. Game 17 was a key ingredient in the multi-billion dollar pacts.

In addition to game news, the league has also set a date for Super Bowl LVI, which will be played on February 13 at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles. The new mega-stadium that opened last year has yet to host fans for the games. The NFL officially called on SoFi to host the Big Game last month.

“With the official Super Bowl LVI date, I join millions of sports fans and Angelenos as we look forward to February 13, 2022, as we head into one of the most exciting events in the world. recent history and the near future of our city, ”said Casey Wasserman, President. of the Los Angeles Super Bowl organizing committee.

All 32 NFL teams will play at least one international game every eight years, the league also said. It’s an upgrade from the many – many – Games of Jacksonville Jaguars inflicted on innocent fans overseas.

Tom Pelissero of NFL Network noted that the expanded schedule, in addition to new media deals, will trigger the “media kicker” in the collective agreement between the league and the players. This will give players 48% of all league revenue.

“This is a monumental moment in NFL history,” said NFL commissioner Roger Goodell. “The ABCs with players and the recent media deals allow us to improve the quality of the NFL experience for our fans. And one of the benefits of every team playing 17 regular season games is the ability for us to continue to develop our game around the world.

As part of the new 17-game schedule, the 2021 regular season kicks off Thursday, September 9 and runs through January 9, 2022. The rules of the extra game mean an extra cross-match between teams with record breaking records. Comparable wins and losses will be added. In 2021, the host team will be at the American Football Conference.

The AFC and NFC will alternate eight and nine home games per season. The only game-free bye week will remain in the mix in 2021.

The NFL also scheduled the Pro Bowl on February 6 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, the Raiders’ new home. It opened in 2020 but has yet to welcome fans for a game.
