Newsom expects all California students to return to class in the fall – Deadline

“I see a much better future than some see, and I see it coming sooner than many think,” California Governor Gavin Newsom said on Wednesday. Newsom was responding to fears of a return to in-person teaching for the state’s students in 2021.

“With caveats,” he continued, “I expect our children to return safely and with in-person instructions in the fall.

So far, according to state figures, 9,000 of California’s 11,000 schools have reopened for at least a few days of in-person instruction or announced a return to class date.

“We can do it and we have to do it. And we have to do it in a sustainable way, and we have to prepare now for full in-person teaching for the next school year, ”Newsom said. “To do that, we have to prove that we can do it safely, to prove that we can continue the progress that we have made.”

Newsom cited current and planned immunization progress as proof that the state will be ready.

“We have 23 million people vaccinated. There will be more than 30 million people vaccinated in just a few weeks, ”the governor said. “We’ll be at 40 million by the middle of next month, at the end of next month.

“By August,” he continued, “anyone who wanted a vaccine will have had the chance to get the vaccine and will have many vaccine choices. So I expect and predict that anxiety will give way to a new reality by August… With caveats, I expect our children to return safely and receive in-person instructions at autumn.

In addition to K-12, the governor said he expects college students to be back on campus “by the fall.” He continued, “I expect people to walk enthusiastically through community colleges, our CUs.”

Governor Tuesday published its “Perspectives for the school year 2021-2022”. The document was not a policy directive, but “intended to provide a more solid school-specific perspective, in an effort to provide as much transparency and time as possible for planning.”

Newsom and the state legislature passed a $ 6.6 billion school reopening program in March, which included $ 2 billion to help districts resume in-person teaching by April 1.

“This is real money that we are investing,” he said of the reopening of schools. “Money is no longer an object now.”

“Use this money to expand learning opportunities, extend the school day, extend the school year,” Newsom said. “Who said you have to finish on June 15th?” Who says that? We don’t say that. We say the opposite. That’s what I want to offer: this flexibility. “
