EXCLUSIVE: New York’s DMA exploded last night at the box office with the return of New York theaters after a pandemic 50-and-a-half-week shutdown with an estimated gross amount of $ 307K, + 614% from last Friday according to sources by BO. I’m also told that NY DMA was by far the # 1 market in the country last night, followed by Salt Lake City, Dallas, Phoenix, Chicago, Houston, Denver, Minneapolis, Detroit and Montreal.
The New York DMA includes theaters in Connecticut, New Jersey, Westchester County, Long Island, as well as the five boroughs. As of Friday, the DMA only grossed $ 43,000 from 60 locations. The $ 307,000 last night clearly came from additional New York openings. All New York theaters operate at 25% capacity restrictions.
AMC boss Adam Aron took to CNBC yesterday to celebrate the reopening of New York theaters, said 13 of the chain’s New York sites were reopening, for a total of 29 in the Empire State. AMC Empire 25 on 42nd Street and its Lincoln Square theater have consistently been ranked pre-pandemic as the top grossing theaters at the national box office. Overall, 90% of the # 1 channel’s theaters are open coast-to-coast.
New York was the first market for new Lionsgate’s headlines Walk in chaos and Focus Features’ Boogie. I’m told the market has worked well for Disney as well Raya and the last dragon, although Salt Lake City was very strong for this lively title.
