The film received the FIPRESCI Award in Venice as well as the Best Screenplay Award before continuing to star in Toronto, where it won an Amplify Voices Award.

Cuaron mentored Tamhane after making his debut with the 2014 festival favorite Court, which saw Tamhane win the Lion Of The Future award in Venice.

Speaking about his new film, director Tamhane said: “The story of The disciple came from my own pursuit of excellence and leadership. It’s about how many of us follow all the rules and yet sometimes find that something is missing. I was honored to have the opportunity to work with a creative genius (and my mentor) like Alfonso Cuarón – who led Roma and Gravity. And now, not only has Netflix acquired it to release it to a savvy global audience. I am truly grateful and honored that the pillars of the global industry have found this film worthy. There is a lot of research into making a film, and my goal as a filmmaker has always been to tell my story authentically in a dramatic setting. You also need to acquire the intelligence and intuition of the public to be able to invest in your story, whatever the cultural context. I’m glad this approach worked well for The disciple. “

Alfonso Cuarón commented: “I believe that Chaitanya is one of the most important new voices in contemporary cinema and I am delighted The disciple can be enjoyed by audiences around the world. “

Pratiksha Rao, Director, Content Acquisition, Netflix India added, “We want to be home to the best Indian films and filmmakers. As we expand our list of films and tell more diverse stories from across the country, we are thrilled to be home to Chaitanya Tamhane, The disciple. The film is a beautiful story of aspiration, struggle and self-doubt, and celebrates the magic of visual storytelling in the context of classical Indian music, which we look forward to sharing with the world.
