One of the best-selling German novels of all time, the poignant story of Erich Maria Note follows three young people who voluntarily enlist in the German army. Full of enthusiasm and patriotic fervor, the boys enthusiastically march into a war they believe in. But once on the Western Front, they discover the soul-destroying horror of war. Their preconceptions about the enemy and the rights and wrongs of conflict are crumbling. On the countdown to the armistice, the protagonist of the novel must continue to fight until the end, with no other goal than to satisfy the desire of the high ranking officers to end the war on a German offensive.
The novel was adapted by Universal and Lewis Milestone in 1930 and won the Oscars for Best Picture and Best Director.
