NBC Universal will shut down sports channel NBCSN by the end of the year, with several major events – most notably, the National Hockey League to USA Network – sent to other properties.
The move was announced on Friday by NBC Universal.
“At the end of 2021, we decided that the best strategic next step for our sports group and society as a whole was to take down NBCSN entirely, with key pieces of NBCSN programming moved to USA Network and in some cases to Peacock for 2022. and beyond, ”wrote Pete Bevacqua, president of NBC Sports, in an internal memo. “This will make USA Network an extremely powerful platform in the media market and give our sports programs a significant audience increase.
NASCAR events will join the NHL on the US network. The English Premier League, which has aired several times on Peacock, has not had its definite future for American television.
NBC has led the NHL games for 15 years, but its televised pact will expire after this season.
Golf Channel and Olympic Channel will not be affected by the closure of NBCSN, Sports Business Daily reported.
Comcast launched NBCSN in 1995 as the Outdoor Life Network. He carried the Tour de France of cycling as his greatest property. In 2006, the NHL came on board and the chain changed its name to Versus.
When Comcast bought NBC in 2011, the name again changed to NBC Sports Network. The channel is currently present in 80.6 million homes.
