“Minari” opens at No. 1 in South Korea; “ Boogie ” debuts at $ 1.2 million – Specialty box office – Deadline
After winning a Golden Globe, many critics surround the accolades as well as the nominations for SAG Award, Independent Spirit Award and Critics Choice, Minari took its success overseas as American family drama A24 opened at number one in South Korea.
Minari cashed in an estimate $ 2.2 million in South Korea, earning more than double Raya and the last dragon on the market. This is the biggest opening of the territory for an American film since Soul which grossed $ 2.5 million.
The Lee Isaac Chung-directed film starring Steven Yeun is in good company as it topped the gross cumulative total in South Korea of previous Oscar contenders like The favourite ($ 1.3M) and Projector ($ 2.1M). It is also in the process of surpassing Green book ‘s gross total of $ 3M.

This is a big problem because Minari tells a very American story and is making waves as a universal narrative in South Korea with the faces of Asian and Asian American actors telling the story through the prism of an Asian American director. South Korea is the third international territory to open Minari. The film is currently in limited release in Australian and New Zealand theaters and has racked up around $ 1 million before wide release after the Oscar names.
In another feat of Asian-American storytelling, Eddie Huang’s feature debut Boogie at Focus Features opened in select theaters on the US side this weekend to earn an estimate $ 1.2M. In addition, IFC Films has opened My year Salinger at the rate of $ 49K.
