Michael Mitnick writes ‘Muppet Man’ for Disney – Deadline

EXCLUSIVE: The current war and The donor scribe Michael Mitnick has been ready to write a Jim Henson biopic Muppet man for Disney and The Jim Henson Company, we can reveal.

Currently in development, the live-action film will retrace the life and times of the legendary puppeteer, creator of The Muppets, Fraggle Rock and many Sesame Street characters, as well as director of cult films such as Labyrinth and The dark crystal.

The film will focus on Henson’s journey in convincing broadcasters that The Muppets was a great idea and how he worked to get the characters to air where they became a staple of comedy.

Lisa Henson, Henson’s daughter, currently in production on Guillermo Del Toro’s upcoming film Pinocchio for Netflix, produced for The Jim Henson Company.

Playwright and screenwriter Mitnick rewrites an earlier version of a screenplay in Adrift scribes Aaron and Jordan Kandell.

The biopic has long been a possibility for The Henson Company, which naturally holds the lifelong rights to Henson. Over a decade ago, the company grabbed Australian scribe Christopher Weekes’ blacklisted script from the puppeteer. Michael Gracey was at one point keen to lead (but is no longer on board). Weekes’ serious story, which also included puppets as characters, beat Aaron Sorkin Social network blacklisted that year, 2009.

Disney has owned the rights to the Muppets characters since 2004 and reportedly had discussions with The Henson Company about a biopic in 2010, but there have been no words since. The studio released the Disney + series Muppets now last year when the franchise’s most recent movie was 2014 pic Most Wanted Muppets.

Entertainment giant Henson died in 1990 at the age of 53.

Mitnick, who was a writer on HBO Vinyl, is also currently working on a limited series on Siegfried & Roy with Peter Chernin and Endeavor Content and is adapting the novel Daylight in Amblin. His game Mysterious circumstances, based on David Grann’s article in The New Yorker, premiered at Geffen Playhouse in 2019. It is replaced by CAA, Grandview and Sloane, Offer.
