Maya Rudolph Meets “New Kids” in Opening Monologue Cast – Deadline

UPDATE with video: Maya Rudolph returned as host on Saturday Night Live, recalling his days as a cast member on the NBC Late Night Sketch Show, while looking ahead.

“It makes me so happy to be here in the place that I love, I can’t tell you that, especially after a year which has been, shall we say, a real kick in the clam”, a said Rudolph in his opening monologue. “But it feels like we’re starting to see a light at the end of the tunnel. People get vaccinated. My parents had theirs; I’m really happy to report this. It’s spring, so goodbye sweaters time and hello leather time? “

Some viewers might know her, she said, because of her nine seasons on the show, between 2000 and 2007. “Some of you might know me as ‘mom’ because I gave birth to you, ”she added. “I have four amazing kids, and they’re all here tonight.

The host then gave her children a warning, “Tonight mom is going to put on a lot of wigs and do a lot of weird voices. So it’s going to be like a typical day at home, ”she said. “I’m just going to wear a bra.”

With his kids sitting down for the show, Rudolph spoke about the meaning of getting them to “the rate I grew up in” – which made him think of “the new kids in the cast just getting started.”

“I feel it’s my duty as a former alumnus to pass on the lessons I’ve learned on this stage to them,” she added, before inviting the recent additions from cast Andrew Dismukes, Punky Johnson and Lauren Holt on stage.

“Band, can you play some music to talk to the babies?” Ah yes, that’s it. Let me tell you something: I’m a huge fan of all of you, ”she said impassively. “You are so talented, so unique, and I remember all of your names: Chirpy, Lil Dee Dee and Calista Vagina.”

Rudolph then took the trio on a walk down memory lane. “Let me tell you about the casting at the time. You see, I was the most shy. I was so nervous I couldn’t look anyone in the eye, ”she said. “Oh, but Rachel Dratch. It was the princess. She was so perfect, with her red hair and all her freckles, and she just did Sixteen candles so she was very hot.

She then recalled her time with Jimmy Fallon, whom she called “the bad boy of the group.” “And the jock,” she added, “he was none other than Emilio Estevez.

“Are you talking about The breakfast club? Johnson asked.

“Some of the details are a bit hazy,” Rudolph continued. “The point is, no matter how difficult things get, you kids will be fine. Everything will be alright. “

Rudolph, Johnson and Holt then pumped their fists into the air to the beat of Breakfast Club anthem, “Don’t You Forget About Me.”

A six-time Emmy nominee who scored two wins in 2020, including an appearance as Kamala Harris on SNL– Rudolph has appeared on the show several times over the years. Tonight, however, is only the second time she has returned to 30 Rock as a host.

Rudolph’s musical guest tonight is Jack Harlow.
