This highly unusual eight-month film awards season comes to a close as the virtual BAFTA and DGA ceremonies take place this weekend and the final Oscar voting is due to begin on Thursday. What better time for Deadline: The Nominees’ very first Contenders movie? The final countdown starts here from 10 a.m.PT with a total of 18 films from 11 studios featuring 45 nominated filmmakers and stars, giving us all the truth about which movies take them all to the end of a long trip that culminates in Hollywood. the biggest night of the year, April 25 (the last date ever for an Oscar show).

In January, over the course of two weekends, we featured separate Contenders film events for documentary, international, and then a great two-day preview on all of this year’s film hopes affected by the pandemic. Now for the first time we are adding a new movie-focused event nominees. This follows last year when we launched Contenders Television: The Nominees Extra Day as part of our Small Screen Awards and Emmy coverage, and it was a big hit (and stay tuned: Contenders Television is coming in May).

Today’s Candidates Film: Nominees will give voters one last chance to catch up on nominated films they may have missed but absolutely should see before voting. We are proud, as part of this day, to present the five directors of the international feature film contenders shining from all over the world, as well as many actors, filmmakers and craftsmen of the best of the best of this extended eligibility year who short. from January 1, 2020 to February 28, 2021.

This 93rd Oscars for 2020-21 is actually the first time since the sixth Oscar ceremony in 1932-33 (when great hotel won the Oscar for Best Picture) that there were years in between for those achievements. It is also an unprecedented year in the history of cinema where, due to the pandemic, virtually all voters will have seen the candidates on their TV or laptop or even on their wristwatch (God help us), and streaming movies automatically became eligible without having to. play in a theater. Hopefully things will get back to normal by the 94th Academy Awards, when everyone can get back to cinema as it was. meant to see, and our Contenders events can revert to an in-person format or at least some sort of hybrid.

Until then, it’s your chance for one last look – or one-stop-shop as I like to call it – a once-in-a-lifetime chance to sample the products of this extraordinary 14-month film year. When we launched Contenders events ten years ago, we saw them as a strictly invite-only service and a chance for industry professionals, guild members and Oscar voters to see clips of this. that studios and distributors touted as their crown jewels. and to hear directly from the people who created them and to play in them. Even in a virtual format, that’s still what we do, and we hope it’s worth it.
