Lincoln Center movie sets reopening date, ending “400 days of dark screens and empty seats” – Deadline

Film at Lincoln Center, a fundamental part of New York City and the global art cinema landscape, will reopen on April 16 after a Covid-19 shutdown of more than a year.

The non-profit organization did not provide details beyond the date, promising to develop programming plans and security measures soon. In addition to its year-round programming, FLC is known for presenting the New York Film Festival, a mainstay of fall for the past six decades that has had to rely on drive-ins and online screenings in 2020. The dates for the 2021 edition have not been announced. . A number of speakers are hoping it can return to a more traditional setup, with Toronto, Telluride and other festivals.

“After 400 days of dark screens and empty seats, we’re excited to turn on our state-of-the-art projectors and reopen the doors to our theater,” the organization said in its announcement.

New York Mayor Bill De Blasio sets May 3 return of city workers to their offices in “powerful message” on pandemic recovery

The Lincoln Center complex includes the Elinor Bunin Munroe Film Center shopping mall as well as the Walter Reade Theater repertoire. With the closure of the nearby Lincoln Plaza and Landmark 57 specialty complexes in recent years, the importance of the FLC as a springboard for artistic and trade publications is increasing.

The reopening will follow that of specialized venues such as the IFC Center and the Théâtre de Paris operated by Netflix. The Film Forum has scheduled its return for April 2, while the Metrograph on the Lower East Side has been on the sidelines so far.

Leading exhibitor AMC was cleared to reopen in New York on March 7, and Regal Cinemas parent CineWorld has just announced a plan to light up the city. New York’s vaccination rate is approaching 13 percent statewide, but it’s higher in the city. Mayor Bill De Blasio predicts that 5 million New Yorkers will be vaccinated by June.

The Lincoln Center campus will host a series of performances and events, including a handful of screenings hosted by FLC, as part of a spring initiative called Restart Stages. It starts on April 7th.

Financially, the closure of theaters for a year has been taxing for New York art house destinations. While film release in general will be a question mark as the pandemic abates, the already delicate specialty ecosystem faces particular challenges due to changes in distribution, rising costs of exploitation and other factors. This is especially true for nonprofits.
