Lance Bass Cites Colton Underwood Backlash for Upcoming ‘Monetization’ – Deadline

Actor / singer Lance Bass says recently released Colton Underwood may receive backlash from the gay community for “monetizing the experience” of the release.

Bass commented on the last episode of The almost famous Ben & Ashley I podcast this week.

Colton announced he was gay to welcome Robin Roberts to the Hello america show earlier this week. Deadline reported that he was planning a Netflix reality show about his life as a gay man.

Bass, who was in the boy group NSYNC, became gay in 2006.

“This gay community is very diverse, but we can also be very fickle,” Bass said on the podcast. “He’s definitely going to get a lot of backlash from the community early on. Not the majority, but there’s a small percentage of the community who aren’t going to like that he’s come out that way, that he’s monetizing the experience. They don’t think it deserves that attention and one of those reasons is, and that’s what I went through when I first went out … when you first went out, most people did. no idea of the LGBT community.

He added, “They don’t know what the problems are because they’ve been so separated from it on purpose. So when someone comes forward as a public figure, so many people immediately say, “It’s too late.” They don’t like supporting him because they don’t feel like you don’t know what you’re talking about yet. But I don’t think Colton is trying to lead this charge by trying to be the spokesperson for the LGBTQ community.

Bass said he could understand Underwood’s situation because NSYNC supporters were largely women. “90% of my fans were women, and they all thought I was straight. I made my money with women and singing about love and using this market. So me going out was scary… because now everyone is going to see me as a liar.
